The ET-2800 is my starting recommendation for ordinary inkjet heat-transfer paper because it solves the part of the workflow that gets expensive fastest: repeatedly buying color ink. It is still a normal home inkjet printer, so you can use it for documents and craft printing when you are not making transfers.
The rear feed is useful because most transfer-paper workflows are better handled as specialty-media jobs rather than something you leave mixed in a cassette. The printer is only 8.5 inches wide, so it is aimed at standard shirt graphics rather than oversized back prints.
Most importantly, I am recommending the ET-2800 here with its normal Epson ink for transfer paper, not as a DIY sublimation conversion. Epson explicitly warns that non-genuine ink can cause damage that is not covered under the limited warranty. The ET-8550 makes sense for one reason that changes what you can physically produce: it handles 13 x 19-inch media. A standard letter-size printer can make a chest logo or medium front graphic, but large adult shirt designs quickly run into the 8.5-inch width limit.
Epson’s six-color system is designed for photo and graphics work. It uses dye-based cyan, magenta, yellow, gray and photo black plus pigment black for text. That broader color system is attractive when you also sell prints, stickers, photos or other creative products, but I would not pay the premium solely because the DPI number looks higher.

The dye is printed to sublimation paper and then, under heat, becomes part of a compatible polyester surface. The F170’s biggest constraint is width. The Brother is on this list for readers whose transfer-paper manufacturer specifically calls for a color laser printer. That distinction is important. Do not buy a laser machine simply because an old buyer guide says laser is faster, and do not run inkjet transfer paper through a hot laser fuser.
The HL-L3280CDW is attractive because Brother gives it a single-sheet manual feed for specialty media and a current color printing platform. People do convert new EcoTank printers by filling them with third-party sublimation ink before normal ink is ever installed. That is a popular DIY route because refillable tanks make the physical process straightforward.
But it is not the route Epson supports for the ET-2800 or ET-8550. Epson recommends genuine ink and warns that non-genuine ink can cause damage not covered by its limited warranty. Once different ink has been put through the lines and printhead, switching the machine cleanly between ordinary inkjet work and sublimation is also not a practical everyday workflow.
